Originally established as a neighborhood library for expats in dire need of a good read, Pondok Pekak has evolved into a community center for tourists, expats and locals. In addition to a fully-stocked adult and children’s library, Pondok Pekak has become one of Ubud’s leading centers for promoting cultural awareness.
Pondok Pekak offers a variety of classes ranging from traditional music, dance, children’s gamelan, mask-making, multi-lingual song circles, wood carving and even one of Ubud’s most sought after Indonesian language for adults and children. Pondok Pekak often hosts various performances, poetry readings, workshops and lectures.
Located in the heart of Ubud, it’s a calm and peaceful environment that promotes a deep understanding and respect for ancient Balinese traditions.
The children’s library is a quiet, relaxed atmosphere where kids lounge around on pillows reading books, playing educational games or solving puzzles. They have books in English, German, Dutch, Japanese, French, Italian and Indonesia.
Balinese children, adults wanting to learn a bit of Indonesian, and folks wanting to see a local performance by both children and adults.
The library is supported by services and programs that cater to tourists. Thus, they graciously accept donations of books and art supplies. Pondok Pekak promotes literacy in both Balinese adults and children and offers free educational classes to the Indonesian community.
