Behind The Yellow Door: Inside The Holywell’s Secret Speakeasy In Hong Kong

Have you spotted recently that bright yellow door on Hollywood Road? Mrs H’s Coffee House is more than a fantastic takeaway artisan coffee and pastry spot. Beyond the façade of the coffee shop lies a charming speakeasy that only people in the know (you!) know about. Come dusk, you are invited to knock on that yellow door and step into a secret drinking den.

As you walk into The Holywell’s you are greeted by the ambiance of a cozy traditional English family home,  inspired by the founders Andrea Mak and Richard Tam’s residences in the serene St. Alban’s and the bustling heart of Chelsea in London.  The 21-seater space is divided into homey settings: plush armchairs and book-laden shelves in the living room, and intimate kitchen booths featuring a countertop bar.

The menu, whimsically styled like a children’s book of illustrations, features beloved recipes from the Holywell family. It offers a creative array of cocktails and mocktails that draw on traditional British tastes and cultural cues. Divided into sections like mains, desserts, and digestives—with options for a tasting set—highlights include The Full English, a breakfast-themed take on the Bloody Mary; the Club Orange, a Negroni styled with a hint of orange-chocolate (our favorite!); and the Banoffee Pie, a liquid interpretation of the classic dessert. For the purists, classic drinks are also available.

Adding to this space’s unique charm, guests are encouraged to rummage around in search of treasured items hidden around the home, with a special prize for successful sleuths: the possibility to send a postcard to loved ones from the venue’s charming little letterbox, and memento of the special evening.
