Serendicity Media Arts Festival In West Kowloon

Discover Spectacular Experiences That The Whole Family Will Enjoy

2023 Feb 13 - 2023 Mar 05

For three weeks starting on February 13, the West Kowloon Cultural District will be host to Serendicity, a free media arts festival like no other. Taking place indoors at the Xiqu Center, outdoors in the Art Park as well as online, the festival includes immersive experiential installations, performances, games and more, which are thought to give insight into new perspectives on technology, art and urban life. All performances are free admission but registration is required on a first-come, first-served basis (except for events happening at the Art Park where no registration is required).

The Scoop:

  • Swiss artist Dan Archer’s Borealis will transform the night sky above the Great Lawn of the Art Park into a vibrant recreation of the Northern lights every evening from 7pm to 10pm. Borealis has toured more than 30 international cities and makes it Hong Kong debut; it is a truly unmissable family experience.
  • Evenings at the Art Park will also see its Dry River Bed be transformed by Berlin-based artist Robert Seidel and his installation Petrichor. Here the natural environment is transformed thanks to abstract video projections and ambient soundscape.
  • Over at the Xiqu Center, the Biometric Theater features seven interactive audio-visual installations by acclaimed artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Data for the exhibit is crowdsourced and using technology, it captures heartbeats, fingerprints, bidy heat and movement to create a kinetic landscape of light bulbs. Open from 12pm-8pm and suitable for ages 8 and above.
  • In a Practical Poet, you will be able to take part in an artist-led gaming experience by moving and removing Chinese characters to influence the outcome of the story. Open from 12pm-8pm and suitable for all ages.
  • In Distributive Intelligence | A Group Mind by Swiss artist Lukas Truniger you can witness an immersive kinetic light installation generated by hundreds of robots. You’ll see the robots performing and interacting with each other, the audience and the environment around them. Open from 12pm-8pm and suitable for all ages.
  • Remembering The Red Chamber is an experimental theatre performance that explores human psychology through digital technology, motion capture, animation and 3D printing and Cantonese opera. Suitable for ages 6 and above. Performances are Monday to Wednesday, 27 February to 1 March 2023 at 7:30pm.
  • You can also explore a series of online events here.
