In 2016, you founded DreamCare, an award-winning one of Hong Kong’s leading childcare solutions, specialising in native Mandarin speaking nannies and early childhood educators. What prompt you to establish DreamCare?
When I was pregnant with my first child in 2015, I needed a professional nanny. I knew learning Mandarin was a growing trend so I wanted to look for a native Mandarin speaking nanny/educator to take care of my baby with me. None of the local nanny agencies operating in Hong Kong could provide me with a suitable candidate. I saw there was a gap so I just jumped right in.
You provide bespoke play-based Mandarin immersion at home. Can you tell us more about that comparing to the traditional learning Mandarin?
Each kid is unique, so we tailor a series of fun learning experience to keep the children engaged and interested by incorporating into their daily lives both at home and outside. For example, our nannies love to take the kids to supermarket where there are so much things to learn – food, colors, textures and even Math. Bringing out their curiosity through encouraging them to ask questions from storytelling is very different than just reading them a story or practicing to write the characters. We put much focus on interaction to nurture children – not just the language skill but curiosity, independence and critical thinking.
Tell us about your nannies. How are they different than the other caregivers?
Currently, we have around 700 nannies with us. They are early childhood educators who are fully qualified in either early childhood education or hold a professional teaching qualification. They have extensive experience in care giving and teaching different ages of kids at private home and in school.
What kind of families do you think would benefit the most from DreamCare Nannies?
As a mum of three, I understand first-hand how challenging it can be to find reliable, trustworthy and available childcare in Hong Kong. I’d say families who see the benefits of learning Mandarin in an immersive way and are also trying to find reliable, trustworthy childcare at home, either part time or full time. We can shoot two birds in one stone.
As a parent and educator, what advice would you offer parents when it comes to dealing with education?
In today’s rapidly evolving world, there are so many things can be done through AI. The traditional education of focusing mainly on the academic may not be sufficient for the future. I believe life skills are more essential for personal and professional success, including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and emotional regulation. Kids need these soft skills all aspects of life, especially during times of great stress, chaos, and confusion in the world.
