New Power Bank Rules For Hong Kong Airlines: What You Need to Know

To enhance aviation safety, Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has introduced new regulations on power bank usage for local airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay Airlines, and HK Express. The rules, effective April 7, 2025, aim to address safety concerns arising from recent incidents involving lithium battery power banks on aircraft.

Key regulations include:

  • Prohibition of using power banks to charge devices during flights
  • Ban on recharging power banks in-flight
  • Restriction on storing power banks in overhead compartments

Passengers are still permitted to carry power banks in their hand luggage but must store them under their seats or in seat pockets. The CAD advises travelers to confirm specific guidelines with their airlines before flying.

These measures align with similar restrictions adopted by airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Thai Airways, Tigerair Taiwan, and Air Busan, reflecting a global push to mitigate safety risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in air travel.

Travelers are encouraged to prepare by fully charging their devices before boarding or utilizing in-seat charging ports when available. Stay tuned for updates as the aviation industry continues to adapt to these safety measures.
