We often think of osteopathy as something we’ll need later in life, but it can also help children address any bodily tensions before problems progress to adulthood.
Why not book an appointment with Fleur Denis, who offers sessions at the Vitality Center and in Mui Wo?
So, what is osteopathy? It’s a manual, healing therapy that diagnoses and cures the mechanical and functional problems of the human body.
For osteopaths, the body’s wellbeing depends on the correct functioning of its different interconnected systems from joints and muscles to nerves and vessels.
When one system doesn’t work well, it can affect the function of others and cause compensation, pain, loss of range of motion and asymmetry. Osteopaths treat this problem with gentle, structural and cranio-sacral manual techniques.
We are supposed to be healthy, straight, strong and flexible – then life happens. Our little ones have a great capacity for adaptation compared to adults, which means they experience less pain. However, they still accumulate strains and blockages.
Children will adapt to stay comfortable, whether that's slouching, or one shoulder is higher or their feet are turning inward. Osteopathy helps remove the tension.
There are plenty of reasons why your child might need to see an osteopath. Maybe they have poor flexibility, postural problems or feet position disorder. Maybe they have wonky teeth or breathe through their mouth. Perhaps they have developed bad habits such has cracking their bones, walking on their tip-toes, sitting in the W position, over-tensing their fingers round their pen or slouching all the time.
Fleur shared that she often encounters childhood injuries when she treats adults. One of her clients had fallen off a chair at school, which had led to back pain, and as an adult, she could still find traces of this fall.
The story demonstrates that childhood injuries can persist if not treated, which is why it's a good idea to visit the osteopath to check everything is in working order.
