How do primary school students benefit from team sports at Hong Kong Academy (HKA)? Participating in sport encourages children to develop key values such as fairness, team spirit, accountability, inclusion, perseverance and respect. It also improves fitness, and releases ‘feel-good’ chemicals like endorphins and serotonin, which help boost mental wellbeing and self-esteem.

Simon Roberts, HKA’s Athletics Director shares, “At HKA we provide a safe and supportive environment where athletes can reach their goals in recreational and competitive play and find a sense of belonging. As coaches we stress sportsmanship, inclusion, fair play and commitment alongside the development of athletic ability and sporting strategies.
“HKA’s sports programme is designed to give primary school students the opportunity to play in 11 sports teams that compete across Hong Kong. As a through school we encourage upper primary and middle school students to train and compete together in league sports, and we recently restarted the weekend sports programme with middle school students coaching primary school students under the supervision of our sports faculty.”
Maria, one of the Grade 7 student coaches, says, “Weekend sports gave me leadership and coaching opportunities where I was able to help younger students develop their game play and treat each mistake as a learning experience, which will make them stronger and smarter as an athlete.”
Grade 5 student Lily plays U12 netball and U14 basketball, comments, “I enjoyed training with the secondary school students as it pushed me to develop my focus and technique. I also loved being included, we had great team spirit and fun when we travelled to matches.”
“Lily was super proud to be picked for the U14 squad,” adds Lily’s mum Kristen, a keen swimmer and athlete. ”We have seen her grow in terms of perseverance, motivation and confidence as a result of this experience.”
