Books can transform how we see and understand the world and each other. With more than 30,000 titles in the library collection, the teacher librarians at Hong Kong Academy (HKA) curate a rich collection of print and digital literature. Why not find out more at their Exploration Day this March?

Understanding the transformative power of literature, HKA student volunteers are taking an active role in the school’s library diversification project. The first step was to audit the collection to identify under-represented categories. The next step? To create a suggested list of titles to address any gaps. The final step is to raise awareness of this during the school’s Community Fair, where families can donate a book to the libraries from the list.
Student volunteers are also supporting the middle school library genrefication project. Assisting with organising the collection into genre-specific shelves, the students’ involvement fosters a sense of ownership in the library, creating a more engaging space for all.
Another group of student volunteers are championing the library Brain Breaks programme. Studies have shown the importance of students having downtime during the school day to cognitively re-charge, socialise and have fun. “Games and Brain Breaks are a great way for students to switch off and take a break so that they can better focus in class,” says Grade 8 student Jamila.
From Pre-K read-alouds to IB Extended Essay writing, Battle of the Books competitions and author visits, the libraries are an important hub where the HKA community can delve into a broad range of writing genres and authors that expand their imaginations and extend their thinking.
With a curriculum that inspires curiosity and nurtures collaboration, this non-profit international through-train school is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes.
Students aged 3-18 years.
