Teaching that captures students’ imagination is what every parent desires for their child. Grade 3 students at Hong Kong Academy recently completed a literacy unit entitled Fractured Fairytales and inquired into how culture is shared through storytelling.
HKA is one of only eight fully-authorised three program IB World Schools in Hong Kong. Learn more about their unique educational programmes by visiting their website or booking a personalised tour of their award-winning campus in Sai Kung!
The eight-week learning unit began with students sharing a favourite fairy tale with the group. They then analyzed the key elements of what makes an effective tale, identified key aspects of their own identity, constructed their own storyline, and created visuals and sound tracks for their story. Students shared works with parents and other students through live book readings, film screenings and illustration displays.
Reflecting on the learning unit teacher Marie Baker said, “This unit provided a framework through which the students developed their ability to work through the writing/storytelling process. Learning to edit and revise their work, take and give feedback and choosing to act on the feedback were all important learning outcomes.”
Teacher Adam Reid added, “We really saw the individual personalities of the children shine through as they chose to inject humour and moments of suspense, add plot twists and reflect themselves in the main characters of their story.”
And a final word from Grade 3 student Finn Fowler, “Making my fairy tale was the biggest project I’ve ever done. It was fun to mix everything from art and music and library together to make our stories. I think my parents will be really proud!”
Hong Kong Academy is a dynamic learning community that provides a rigorous and joyful international education for every student.
HKA educates children aged 3-18 years and their global citizenship programme starts in Pre-Kindergarten.
HKA is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programs. It is also the only school in Hong Kong offering the Global Citizen Diploma program.
