During their Individuals and Societies class, Grade 8 students have been learning about human rights, the right to education, and the barriers to education that many girls face and the impact this has on them and their families.
As part of this project, they met with Jordan Hattar, Director of Help4Refugees, who introduced the students to two Syrian refugees displaced through conflict studying for their university degrees in Jordan.
One of the young women had completed her studies but wasn’t permitted to get her official degree as her scholarship only paid for three years of her four-year program. Without her degree she couldn’t move on, and wasn’t legally allowed to work and pay the money owed.
After hearing the stories of these young women, the students began an advocacy campaign at school to raise awareness and funds for the undergraduates so they could complete their studies. These Eighth graders spoke of the refugees’ plight at assembly, raised funds at the HKA Community Day and applied to the student council for a grant to reach the required funding amount.
The young women can now graduate this summer, putting them in a much stronger position as they continue to rebuild their lives.
