Meta is set to launch its “teen accounts” feature for Instagram users under 16 in Hong Kong and the broader Asia-Pacific region this week. This new initiative aims to enhance online safety and provide better protection for young users on the popular social media platform.
The rollout of teen accounts in Hong Kong comes with several built-in safeguards designed to address parents’ primary concerns about their children’s online activities. These protections include:
A key aspect of this new feature is the involvement of parents or guardians. Teens already using the app will be automatically placed into these protected accounts, with notifications sent to existing young users about the upcoming changes. Importantly, teens will need parental permission to modify any of these protective settings.
For parents, the new system introduces a “supervision feature” allowing them to monitor their teen’s messaging activity for the past week and set daily time limits for app usage. Parents can also restrict Instagram access during specific periods, such as nighttime.
This expansion of teen accounts to Hong Kong is part of Meta’s broader effort to address concerns about young users’ safety on social media platforms. As digital interactions continue to play a significant role in teenagers’ lives, such protective measures become increasingly crucial in fostering a secure online experience for young users.
While social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, offering valuable opportunities for socialization and connection, the introduction of Instagram’s teen accounts in Hong Kong represents a welcome step towards enhanced online safety. These new safeguards provide an additional layer of protection for young users, but it’s crucial to remember that parental vigilance remains a key component in ensuring a safe and positive digital experience for teenagers.
Kids under 16, and their parents!
While these measures aim to create a safer online environment for young users, Meta acknowledges the ongoing challenge of age verification. The company is exploring various methods to prevent teens from falsifying their age, though no foolproof solution has been found yet.
