The Third Wave Coffee moment is alive and well in our city! In the past, Jakartans drank their coffee hot, quick and sweet, often made in an instant by bicycle vendors. Luckily, bad coffee need not plague us any longer! In the past several years, we’ve seen huge growth in independent brewers and roasters in the city, and the quality of coffee has taken a real leap. There is now a collection of great cafes and coffee shops where fantastic coffee is roasted and brewed, and quality is valued above all else. Here’s a list of our favorites from Bandung to Kemang and beyond.
Located right downtown in Thamrin City Office Park, this is the spot to be for hard-working young creatives with a serious caffeine habit. There are a few tables on the first floor, and a beautiful big workspace upstairs. Tanamera is a great place to plug in and get some serious work done. Sourcing their beans from Indonesia’s finest producing areas, Tanamera roasts their blends in-house. The result is an outstanding selection of single origin coffees.

Crematology offers the ultimate cozy spot in the middle of Suryo street, near Senopati street in South Jakarta. It's a perfect pit stop if you need a caffeine shot when you are either on your way to the office or stuck in the after-office-hour traffic. The cafe has 3 other locations and still got the groove of being both a work and a hangout place. Other than fresh coffee, brunch or lunch is also a must-try. You can choose between healthy plates, such as salad and smoothie bowl, or pastries, pancakes, and waffles.

We’re reluctant to give this one away, as it is our favorite stop for a superb coffee. But after all, sharing is caring. Giyanti Coffee Roastery is where you’ll find Jakarta’s best cup. Intentionally small scale, and entirely down to Earth, Giyanti brews a fantastic cup of coffee. They source and roast their own beans with a real eye (and nose? and mouth?) for detail. Coffees are brewed expertly by the roaster himself and are perfect, every time.

Anomali has been known as the pioneer of coffee hotspots that highlight local beans. The company continues its expansion to new locations, and still serves the best of local beans, from Sumatera to Papua (with some very nice illustrated packaging, of course!). Indonesian single origin cup is a must here! Get to know more about Indonesian beans by joining their coffee classes.

But First is secretly located in the backyard corner of Pelaspas, a hip young food court in Dharmawangsa. This tiny coffee place is decorated with vintage wood and a big lush tree in the outdoor area. Their artisanal coffee is served in a super cool porcelain cup. Not ideal an ideal place for you and the family due to the lack of space, but a great place for you and the girls to have a coffee break.

Hidden behind Aksara Kemang bookstore, this place will melt your heart with its peaceful white-dominated atmosphere and a catchy Stormtrooper coffee container. Ruang Seduh means "brewing room", and is also a public coffee lab. Everybody is welcomed to learn how to make proper coffee, even the kids! Order your drink, grab an apron and the barista will happily supervise you to get from beans to cup. Check out the movie schedule at Kinosaurus on the side, and you can also get a good show after you have been caffeinated.

With a subway-inspired vibe, Common Grounds is a cool hideaway in Central Jakarta. They do the usual espresso drinks together with single origin filter coffees. The coffee is perfectly fine, but it is the all-day breakfast menu that’s generating the real buzz. We have it on good authority that the Eggs Benedict is THE thing to order.

Koultoura Coffee is one of the first outlets to bring the third-wave coffee to West Jakarta. Colorful with just the right amount of quirkiness, this hip coffee house serves really great coffee, at an even better price. You’ll find espresso drinks, and coffee in both the French Press and Vietnamese Drip mode to accompany the breakfast and brunch menu. We hear that Chicken Maryland is absolutely delicious Koultoura, and definitely a must-try!

Dog lovers were really sad when Caswell's closed down their dog park + artisan coffee house. But grieve no longer because Say Something just recently opened at Como Park, a retail complex with an off-leash dog park. Not only can you chill with your furry friends, kids can also roam free in the park while you're enjoying Say Something's always-fresh brew in a cup. Pssst, their affogato is the best!
