What are the Things to Consider When Choosing a Preschool in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia?

With a lot of preschools to choose from, how do you find the best fit for not only your little one but for the whole family? There are a lot of things to consider, from location to religious affiliation (Islam is the official religion of the country, preference for Islamic preschools is not uncommon), schools hours to cost, to name a few. We’ve broken down some of the most important things that you might consider when choosing the best preschool in Malaysia:

  • Curriculum: There are specific reasons why one would choose, let’s say, Montessori over Waldorf/Steiner, but there is no one better to decide this for your child than you. But research and getting to know the school and their team will help in making that choice. At the end of the day, seeing your child coming home happy is the important thing. Another thing to consider is the religious program. Malaysia’s official religion is Islam and some schools have an Islamic program or are offering classes.  
  • Location: With time being a scarce commodity these days, it’s important for a lot of families to choose a school located within arms reach. There might be other circumstances at play, like proximity to the workplace or extracurricular activities, but it is always good to check if a school that you like has another branch closer to your needs.
  • School Hours: When both parents are working and there is no household help, choosing a school with extended hours is a must. Some schools offer longer programs and other childcare services that cater to individual needs. 
  • Special Needs Program: Not all schools offer the option of inclusivity, and if this is a need, it’s best to check first and foremost. 
  • Language Program: While most schools are bilingual – English and Malay – some schools offer more languages, such as Mandarin, French, to name a few. 
  • Teacher to Child Ratio: Some schools offer a lower number of students per teacher ratio, while others conform to national requirements. 
  • Facilities and extra-curricular activities: If it’s pertinent for your child to have their extra-curricular activities in the school as well, some schools offer classes as extras or after-school activities. However, do take note if the extra-curricular will be held in school, others don’t have the facilities and require that the classes be held in a third-party facility. 
  • Cost: If we were all Musks, Gates, or Bezos cost will not even be an issue. But since we do have budgets, knowing how much the tuition fees and additional costs for the school are also important. Some schools have registration fees, while others require deposits.
