The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) collaborates with arts and cultural groups and community partners to promote and develop local Chinese culture. Young or old, there’s always something for everyone at SCCC. This April, take a step into the past and marvel at art that will bring back fond memories at Through the Eyes of a Child: Art by Quek Hong Shin, and uncover the longevity of the written word as Afterwords travels out of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre to the heartlands.
Through the Eyes of a Child: Art by Quek Hong Shin
When: April 2 – August 31, 2021.
Take a journey through time, and discover the cultural icons that defined Singapore before it became the bustling metropolis of today. Through the Eyes of a Child: Art by Quek Hong Shin captures the vanishing collective memories from a time when coconut trees towered over attap houses, and children played in the busy back-alleys of old Chinatown. The exhibition features the people and places inspired by Hong Shin while he was growing up in the 1980s. It includes 14 artworks from his popular book series’: The Amazing Sarong, The Incredible Basket, The Brilliant Oil Lamp and The Marvellous Sugee Cake, along with new illustrations created specially for this showcase.
Afterwords Travelling Exhibition
When: April 12, 2021 – Jan 31, 2022.
What happens to a piece of paper after it has outlived its purpose? What else does it want to say when there is no space left?
Check out how calligraphy artist Malik Mazlan and haiku* poet Dave Tai introduced new perspectives to canvases created from drafts, past projects, and personal items, by refreshing them with haiku and calligraphy through the Afterwords exhibition.
Following its showcase at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, the exhibition will travel into the heartlands this April. Don’t miss your chance to check it out at nine public libraries across Singapore and find out how Afterwords underlies the longevity of the written word and maximizes the exploration of recycling waste paper to form the foundation of new works.
