Ah, Singaporean moms. They’re definitely one of a kind. From their incessant nagging with love to their almost magical ability to sniff out the best deals in town, our moms are a unique blend of tough love, savvy skills, and heartwarming tenderness, even if they mask it with a “Aiyah, why you never listen to me!”
This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating all the quirky, classic things only Singaporean moms seem to do, whether they make us groan, laugh, or ultimately feel deeply loved. Here’s our tribute to the everyday antics we love about them!
Chicken essence when you're tired. Watercress soup when you're heaty. ABC soup for “general health.” No matter the problem, your mum’s solution is probably some form of soup. And you better finish it “so expensive leh, don’t waste.” Sure, we used to roll our eyes as kids, but now? Admit it – There's nothing like a bowl of mum's soup to make everything feel right in the world.

If you've ever watched your mum pick out vegetables at the wet market, it's a next level skill. Tap here, press there, smell this, scrutinise that. Then she walks away from one stall, only to return 10 minutes later because that one aunty had slightly fresher cai xin. Is it exhausting? Yes. Is it effective? Also yes. Singaporean mums simply know the difference between “just okay” and “worth the calories.”

Be it NTUC FairPrice, Shopee flash sales, or Watsons 1-for-1 deals — your mum knows all of them. And she will tell you. Whether it’s via WhatsApp, a screenshot, or a shout from the kitchen: “Girl ah! Your favourite shampoo is 30% off now!” Gotta admit, her deal radar is better than any app. And when you finally buy something full price? Prepare for the scolding.

You got caught in the rain because you didn’t bring a umbrella? Instead of wiping you dry, the Singaporean mum will likely say “I told you already.” It may sound like nagging, but really, it’s her way of saying, “I care about you so much, I want you to listen because I love you.” It’s peak Singaporean mum affection — tough, but 100% real.
Moved out already? Doesn’t matter. Come home for a visit and you’ll leave with enough food to feed a small village. And if you say you’re full? Their response: “Eat some more lah, don’t waste food!” Let’s be real, Singaporean mums are the original food influencers. They express love through your stomach, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

That plastic container from CNY cookies? Reused. Old towels? Turned into floor cloths. Your Primary 5 assessment books? Still somewhere in the storeroom. “Can still use what!” Sure, they’re doing their part for sustainability, but it’s also due to nostalgia. Honestly, who needs IKEA storage when mum’s system of reused biscuit tins and mooncake boxes works perfectly?

Fever? Po zhai pills. Cough? Luo han guo drink. Stomach pain? Rub oil, drink warm water, and lie down.Singaporean mums are basically homegrown doctors, pharmacists, and TCM practitioners all rolled into one. And sometimes, her random remedy actually works better than anything from the clinic.

A familiar scene is this. You: “Mum, where’s my charger?” Your mum: “ON THE TABLE! NEXT TO THE RED BAG! I TOLD YOU JUST NOW!” Forget text messages. Singaporean mums have the vocal projection of a theatre performer. Bonus points if she’s scolding you and giving directions at the same time. Scary, but efficient.
Singapore’s weather is erratic. So we totally get why mums insist on bringing along things like tissues and an umbrella. It’s peak kiasu survival prep — and half the time, she's right. Admit it, you’ve used that umbrella at least once and thought, “Wah, num really knows.”

You shouldn’t worry about losing your earpods or IC when you have a Singaporean mum. Trust that she will find it with no clues, just pure instinct. She’ll storm through your room like a detective on a mission, muttering “Aiyoh, everything also must I find” — then uncover your missing item in under 5 minutes.
