Congratulations! In a few months, it will be time to welcome your bundle of joy into the world! One of the crucial decisions would perhaps be the maternity hospital you want to deliver at. Whether you should opt for private or public, single or shared room, amenities and services – there seems to be endless things to plan for and so little time. Here are some points to guide your decision making between private and public hospitals and hopefully make your selection process easier.
- Costing: Under the MediSave Maternity Package, Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PRs) can opt to use MediSave to offset a portion of the maternity package fee and this scheme applies to both private and public hospitals. Costs at public hospitals are generally more competitive compared to private hospitals, and Singaporeans can enjoy further subsidies from the government if they choose the former. However, this often comes with a downside which we will cover in the subsequent points.
- OB-GYN: One essential thing to do as early as possible, is to check if your preferred OB-GYN is affiliated to the hospital. Unlike private hospitals where you have the option to choose one doctor to follow you through your pregnancy, at public hospitals, you may end up seeing a different doctor each time you visit. Although your OB may not be the one who delivers your child, it is recommended to conduct a thorough research on the hospital staff, facilities and location to ensure they meet your pregnancy needs and requirements.
- Delivery Method: Most hospitals offer either natural birth or cesarean delivery and for something less conventional among Singaporeans like water birth, currently only one hospital in Singapore provides this option. Also, if you are planning to engage a doula, make sure to check beforehand as not all hospitals allow doula support.
- Amenities: In addition to facilities in the delivery ward and maternity rooms, time is another important deciding factor. Private hospitals typically have shorter waiting times, smoother administration processes and less restrictions on visiting hours compared to public hospitals. Maternity packages offered by private hospitals often include access to a range of exclusive maternity programs and discounts.
