Hoorah! Finally the mandatory option of having your little bubs and tots travel in car seats is here! Under the Road Traffic Act, it is illegal for private hire cars, which include Grab and Uber, to carry passengers under 1.35m without a booster seat or a child restraint. Uber, Grab and Taxi Baby Singapore have taken the initiative to provide this service by teaming up with car seat manufacturers to equip their vehicles with safety approved car seats. Little Steps has the low-down on each of these services and costs involved. Here’s to safer rides for our little ones and raising awareness that car seat safety is absolutely vital!
Since last year, the GrabFamily service has been in their beta-testing phase and fitted a select number of GrabCars with Mifold Grab-and-Go booster seats, specially catered for kiddos between 4 to 7 years. Their drivers for this service have been trained to ensure that your little ones are buckled up safely. The GrabFamily service, costs SG$2 more than the regular GrabCar base fare of SG$2.50. To ensure that drivers are prepared for a ride with a child, it’s best for you to book a GrabFamily ride rather than a normal GrabCar ride which is not equipped with the seat. Do note that the driver of the GrabCar can refuse to pick up families with kids without their own booster seat as it is against the law if he does so.

Following suit, Uber has launched its Uber Car Seat service for kiddies aged 1 and up. Yes, you heard it right, from as young as 1 years old! Uber Car Seat vehicles are installed with the IMMI Go Car Seat that caters to kids 1.45 meters. For the use of this car seat, your little one must be at least 12 months old and weigh between 10 to 25kg. Uber’s highest-rated uberX drivers have been trained and certified on how to safely secure the IMMI Go Car Seats so you can be assured that your child is properly secured in the seat. To book the Uber Car Seat service, simply enter your destination, scroll to the ‘Extra Seats’ page and tap on ‘CAR SEAT’. The rates for Uber Car Seat is the same as uberX except that there will be an extra SG$5 booking fee.
Rejoice for parents whose little ones have to take school buses! Top child vehicle safety team, Taxi Baby Singapore, has announced the launch of Singapore’s first School Bus Safety Program, which aims to keep school-aged children properly restrained on bus journeys to and from school. This program enables schools with access to the Mifold Grab-and-Go booster seat and the RideSafer Delight wearable harness, for use on all bus journeys. If you decide to sign your kids up for school bus routes, you are to purchase one of these child restraints for use on bus journeys. Schools will differ in their operation of the program, but they’ll ensure that all their teacher assistants and bus attendants are equipped with the necessary skills to accurately use and install these restraints. Taxi Baby Singapore will be announcing the addition of more schools to this program in the months ahead so watch for it!
