Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Indonesia. Located on the island of Java, this colourful city, known affectionately as “Jogja” amongst locals, is a treasure trove of stunning thousand-year-old architectural sites, intricate handicrafts as well as traditional puppetry. There is an underlying current of spirituality, and life moves along here at a much slower pace making it more of an ideal leisurely pitstop for families than frenetic Jakarta. Here are some of the best things to do with kids in Yogyakarta!
There is only a small cluster of global hotel chains in Yogyakarta - the Hyatt Regency, Melia, Novotel, Ibis and Sheraton, with the Sheraton and Hyatt being the most family-friendly. Do not discount the local offerings though. We highly recommend the Royal Ambarrukmo, housed within a former royal residence right next to Plaza Ambarrukmo, where you can shop for sundries at French hypermarket Carrefour.
The primary highlight of any trip to Yogyakarta is the ancient Buddhist monument of Borobudur, set against the spectacular vista of the Menoreh mountain range. Prambanan, a thousand-year old Hindu temple compound is another majestic sight not to be missed. Make sure to drop by Jalan Malioboro, Yogyakarta's main shopping thoroughfare to pick up some traditional wares and clothing. Your kiddos will love all the happenings too!
