Mongolia 1 Week Itinerary For Families Traveling With Kids

The Perfect Itinerary For Families

One week in Mongolia with kids

Put simply, there is nowhere on earth quite like Mongolia. It provides the perfect opportunity to spend time together with family and friends, relax from the hustle and bustle of daily life, get the kids back in nature from all the concrete city living, and be somewhere intrepid yet comfortable, not far from Hong Kong.  Here is a handy 1 week itinerary for families looking to visit Mongolia with kids.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar

Upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, you will be met by your guide and driver and transferred to your hotel. As soon as you step out of the airport you will smell the sweet scent of the Mongolian land – intoxicating! After settling in, head off for a relaxed walk around town followed by dinner at a local restaurant, giving you your first taste of Mongolian cuisine.

  • Day 2: Ulaanbaatar to Lake Khovsgol

This morning, fly from Ulaanbaatar to Muron, the capital of Hovsgol province in the north. Transfer to Khatgal then take a boat across the stunning lake to your eco camp on the eastern shore. Arriving in the early afternoon, let the kids roam free as you kick back and soak up the incredible views.

  • Day 3: Lake Khovsgol

Enjoy a full day beside and around idyllic Khovsgol Lake. There are plenty of wonderful hikes: inland, clifftop, long and short loops, as well as great horse rides where you are likely to see wildlife such as deer, marmots, argali sheep, ibex, sable and moose! You might also like to take a kayak out, lie on the pebbly beach, take a brave dip in the icy waters or turn the heat up in the sauna. You can be as active or relaxed as you like, but don’t forget to enjoy a drink overlooking the sunset across the water!

  • Day 4: Lake Khovsgol to Ulaanbaatar

Head back to Muron for your midday flight to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, travel to a ger camp not far from the airport for a relaxing afternoon spent out in nature.

  • Day 5: Ulaanbaatar to Jalman Meadows

After breakfast, head out east to the giant Chinggis Equestrian Monument where you can climb all the way up the horse’s neck for views across the great Khaan’s land. Afterwards, continue to your new home at Jalman Meadows. This stunning valley is normally ablaze with wildflowers in August and you can hop aboard a yak cart and head to the river. Some guests may want to use the camp telescope to spot some of the rare breeds of birds that live in the woods nearby. Your family can also hire mountain bikes, have a wrestling lesson or try your hand at archery.

  • Day 6: Nomadic Encounter

Today brings a full emersion into nomadic life! Spend the day understanding and helping with daily nomadic activities such as gathering firewood and water with our friends in the valley. Perhaps try your hand at shooting a bow and arrow or herd sheep and goats – you can get as involved as you feel comfortable with. Some might opt to help put up a Mongolia ger and make some traditional Mongolian food. Steamed dumplings or friend hushuur are inevitable as are learning how to play a traditional Mongolian game or two. You might like to ride a Mongolian horse or sit in a yak cart before heading back to your beautiful camp.
  • Day 7: Jalman Meadows to Ulaanbaatar

After a relaxed breakfast, travel back towards the city via the exciting 13th Century Camp. Spend a few hours learning about old Mongolia as you travel back in time and play at being part of Chinggis’s army. Discover what life was like during the Great Khan’s time – there are old-style gers, separate ger encampments depicting life in different periods of Mongolia’s history, demonstrations, warrior performances, music shows and more. Alternatively, you may prefer to relax in the meadows or head back to the city to fit in some souvenir shopping.

  • Day 8: Ulaanbaatar to Hong Kong

This morning, transfer to the airport in time for your onward flight home. Your great Mongolian adventure has come to an end! The sample itinerary below is a one-week journey through Central Mongolia and the Lake Khovsgol region, but can be adapted to fit each family’s needs based on what they want to see and do whilst in country.
